If you were out and about in Settle on Good Friday morning, you may have seen scenes from Journey to the Cross taking place at various spots around the town.
It begins at the Methodist Church, with the Last Supper, before moving to the Millennium Garden for the Betrayal of Jesus by Judas. The Market Square then witnesses the Trial of Jesus before Caiaphas and Pilate, and then the play concludes in the grounds of the Parish Church with the Crucifixion.
It is a very moving drama, which has been performed in Settle since 2009 (except for 2020 due to Covid) with all the parts played by local people, some of whom have been involved since it began.
The play doesn’t cover the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Day, though this is celebrated locally by a Dawn Service in the grassy area next to the Quaker Meeting House.
