Settle & District Community News Issue 187 (Jun/Jul 2025)

Is Settle ‘a dying town’? That’s the headline the BBC chose to run on a story on its website about the possible closure of the Arla Dairy. There is no doubt that the loss of a major employer would be a significant blow and that many people affected, directly or indirectly, are worried. We summarise developments in this issue, but elsewhere inside the current edition there is plenty to indicate that the local community is as busy and active as ever and that life will go on here no matter what.

Our cover artist is Philip Treacy, who recently moved back up to Yorkshire after 35 years in London. Philip is a keen cyclist and says the hills around here have always been an attraction and he has joined the Settle Wheelers to explore more.

We are on the lookout for more volunteers to help out with the distribution of Community News around the district, particularly in the areas of Rathmell, Hellifield and Stainforth. If you think you might be able to help, please email distribution@settlenews.co.uk

After several weeks of sunshine that left gardens gasping and streams drying up, I’m writing this with the sound of raindrops lashing against the window. In the Yorkshire Dales, when it comes to the weather you never know just what you’re going to get, but in Settle, as summer approaches, one thing you can be sure of is the re-emergence of our flowerpot friends. Find out how you can get involved in this year’s festival inside the latest issue of Community News.
