As a general rule we like to bring you positive stories in Community News, but unfortunately in this issue we cannot ignore the proposed closure of the Arla Dairy plant.
However, like any print publication these days it is hard to remain ‘up to the minute’ as news breaks, so in addition to the story on page 4 of issue 186, we urge you to keep your eyes and ears open for the latest developments in the campaign to save the Settle site and the jobs that depend on it.
Also inside, we have details of local events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day in May. It will be a time for memories and reflection. As conflicts continue to rage in various parts of the world, are the lessons of the past ever truly learned?
I would like to send the sincere condolences of the editorial team to the family and friends of Kathleen Kinder who sadly passed away in February. Kathleen was a great advocate for Community News and contributed a variety of articles to the magazine, as recently as issue 185. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
On a lighter note, I would like to thank Ron Stone from Rathmell who has supplied us with a delightful piece of artwork for our cover, reminding us that as spring turns into summer and the days grow longer, nature can bring a much-needed splash of colour into our lives, lifting our spirits when perhaps other things are having the opposite effect.
