The nights are drawing in, Halloween is on the horizon, followed by Bonfire Night and then Remembrance Day, when we remember the fallen of the many conflicts that have sadly scarred our history. A sombre moment, reflected in the poppies on the cover of our October/November 2025 issue – click here to read it online now.
Also featured on the cover is the Yorkshire Festival of Story which runs from 3rd to 9th November in Settle. We have full details inside and our thanks go to Sita Brand of Settle Stories who provided the artwork.
The Community News Annual General Meeting takes place on 7th October. It’s your chance to meet the team behind this magazine and have a say on its future. Click here for more details.
We may like to complain about repeats on TV, but ‘The Long Drag’, a documentary first broadcast in 1988 about the impending closure of the Settle-Carlisle railway line popped up again on BBC Four recently. It was a fascinating glimpse into a past that could have made the future of the district very different indeed if the original closure plan had been carried out. It seems unthinkable now to imagine Settle without its famous railway, so thanks are due to all those who had the vision and the vigour to successfully campaign to keep it open. You can watch the programme on BBC iPlayer here.
Our next issue will be out just as the countdown to Christmas gets serious and we are inviting local schoolchildren to send us their designs for our cover. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will come up with!
