It’s time to say farewell to summer. ‘What summer?’ I hear you ask.
The weather is an unreliable guide, so for me summer is over when I hear Rule Britannia being played at The Last Night of the Proms, which marks the start of a long and unofficial countdown to Chri… no, don’t worry, I won’t say the word just yet! There’s a lot to get through before we unpack the trees and decorations, unless you work in the retail trade of course.
First, the clocks go back on October 27th giving us all an extra hour in bed. Then we have a series of landmark events in the calendar, from Halloween to Bonfire Night and Remembrance Sunday. We’ve included aspects of all of these on the cover of our Oct/Nov 2024 issue, which features a fiery piece of artwork by Fiona Ludlam-Brown from Hellifield.
Schools have also returned for the new autumn term and we hear about the achievements of students at Settle College, and how Giggleswick School is dealing with the imposition of VAT on fees.
Other highlights inside this issue include a report on the Horton-in-Ribblesdale agricultural show, a meeting with the young entrepreneur behind Lords Courtyard and invigorating news of big things happening off-stage at Victoria Hall.
As the nights draw in, we hope your Community News will keep you informed and entertained until we return with another issue just in time for Chri… no, I’m definitely not going to say it!
