Summer in Settle does not necessarily guarantee good weather, but one thing you can always rely on to raise a smile even when the absence of sunshine darkens our sensational scenery, is the return of the annual Flowerpot Festival.
The cover of Issue 182 of Community News encapsulates the contrast, with a rather wintry Pen-y-ghent illustrated by artist Sheralee Duckworth, above a selection of the fantastic flowerpot creations you can find dotted around the town until 1st September.
If you’re lucky enough to live here, our flowerpot friends will need no further introduction, but for visitors who would like to find them all, be sure to purchase a Flowerpot Trail & Quiz Leaflet from one of the following outlets: Settle Tourist Information Centre; Lamberts Newsagents; The House that Jack Built; Cottontail Crafts; Forage & Feast; The Talbot Arms; Watershed Mill; The Folly Coffee House.
Summer also means lengthy school holidays and if you are a parent looking for ways to keep the kids entertained, turn to pages 26-27 for plenty of free activities for all ages taking place at Settle Library.
I’ve just returned from holiday myself, having spent an enjoyable couple of weeks in the USA and I took a copy of Community News with me for a photo opportunity on the banks of Lake Superior in Minnesota. You can view the result on page 54.
Of course, you don’t need to venture too far afield from our own district to find plenty of interesting things to do, and we hope this issue of Community News will keep you informed and perhaps also help you discover something new.
