Welcome to the June/July 2024 issue of Settle & District Community News.
Amongst the many wonderful attractions of living in this area is Victoria Hall.
In the space of just a few days in April I was able to watch a very impressive Elton John tribute show, two consecutive concerts by the acclaimed folk-rock act Oysterband, and a live broadcast from the National Theatre in London of ‘Nye’ starring Michael Sheen as Aneurin Bevan, the founder of the NHS.
In addition, I already have my tickets booked for The Men They Couldn’t Hang later this year, a band I have followed for 40 years but would never have expected to see playing almost on my own doorstep.
Victoria Hall is a very important part of our community life, and you can read about how things work behind the scenes in our special feature.
We have been carrying regular updates from our local rugby and cricket clubs in recent issues, and I’m delighted to say we can now add football to our sports coverage. You can find an end of season report from Settle FC here.
In our previous issue, we reported on an upcoming exchange visit from Settle’s twin-town, Banyuls-sur-Mer, and you can find out how our VIP guests from France enjoyed their stay in the Yorkshire Dales here.
The UK will be going to the polls on 4th July following the Prime Minister’s announcement of a General Election. Due to the timing, we weren’t able to cover this in detail in Community News as we did with the recent Mayoral election, but you can find out information on how to register to vote and more online at www.northyorks.gov.uk/your-council/elections-and-voting and there will be also be a hustings event in Settle on Tuesday 25th June to which all eight candidates have been invited.
Our next issue is due out on 2nd August. If you would like to send anything in for publication or book an advertisement, the deadline is 15th July.
