Cricket News: Bring on the Girls

Cricket News

Settle Cricket Club are pleased to share that we have entered a Girls under 15 Hardball Team into the West Yorkshire Women & Girls Cricket League this year.

The club has seen an impressive increase in the number of girls registering as members of the club over the last few years. Junior Chair, Ian Walker, said: “It is a remarkable achievement to go from no female teams to four female teams, competing in the leagues, in only three years.”

Due to this growth in interest, as well as their ever-improving skills on the pitch, it seemed only natural to offer the opportunity for the junior girls to participate in hardball cricket, within a dedicated girls’ league.

Earlier in May, the Girls under 15 Hardball side played their first game, facing the Harrogate Hawks. Led skilfully and energetically by their captain, Isobel North, together with some outstanding batting and fielding, Settle CC Girls under 15 won by six wickets. A great start to their season and we look forward to following their development journey as the season progresses.

In addition to the Girls under 15 Hardball Team, Settle Cricket Club is proud to have three other female teams. Namely, Girls Development Softball (u10), Girls Softball (u12) and Women’s Softball, all running alongside five mixed junior teams, five men’s teams and walking cricket.

14 Junior players have been selected for representative squads this season. Namely for, Upper Airedale Junior Cricket Association, Northern League and Palace Shield, North West Cricket League, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. We are immensely proud of their achievements at district and regional level. One particular junior player to note is Betsy Caton, who was selected to represent the North Yorkshire Regional Girls under 13 squad. Betsy is the first junior girl in the club’s history selected to play Regional cricket.

The success of its junior players is a testament to the club’s ethos of nurturing talent and fostering vital qualities essential to cricket such as sportsmanship, dedication, focus and resilience.

The club offers regular junior training sessions, suitable for all age groups and levels of development. Our primary school evening for Years 2-6 is on a Friday night, where they receive specialised coaching from our enthusiastic senior team coaches, as well as our experienced and dedicated volunteers. These Friday night sessions are a social key-point on the junior cricket calendar and are well attended by both players and their parents.

The U13s train on Monday evenings and the U15s train with the seniors on a Tuesday. We also offer one-on-one sessions with the club’s international professional, Ashen Silva, or small group training sessions over the school holidays, also run by Ashen alongside other Settle CC coaches. We aim to provide a supportive environment within which players are encouraged to progress and enhance their cricket skills. Women’s outdoor training is currently taking place on Wednesdays at Marshfield from 7pm to 8pm, and we encourage you to come down and have a go, even if you have no previous cricket experience.

Please consult the club’s social media channels, as well as the club’s website on Pitchero.com for updated information regarding dates, times and costs of all training sessions and workshops.

Settle Cricket Club has made fantastic strides with our junior section, as well as with women’s and girls’ cricket, and we welcome any new members who would like to have a go. Settle Cricket Club is truly a club for everyone!
